Margarita Avila
Director of Workforce Development
Margarita Avila is an innovative trailblazer Latina, connector, and dynamic leader. She serves as the Director of Workforce Development at the Latino Academy of Workforce Development, Inc. in Madison, WI where she develops and steers the agency’s strategy to engage people, communities, and entities across Dane County in the Latino Academy’s work. She positively impacts the American workplace by cultivating the pipeline of Latinx talent and providing insight, access, and support to their careers.
Ms. Avila is a dedicated advocate for positive change and empowerment. She currently serves as the Membership Officer for the Prospanica Milwaukee Chapter and is a board member for the Fair Opportunity Project. Margarita's pursuit of excellence is evident through her involvement in various professional development programs. With a rich history of leadership roles, Margarita has made substantial contributions to both the business and education sectors for the past fifteen years. Before her role at the Latino Academy of Workforce Development, Inc., she served as the Director for Multicultural Initiatives at the American Heart Association. Her diverse experiences encompass marketing and public relations with Mark Thatcher Real Estate, LCC., MiVoz.com, and ESPN Milwaukee, as well as curriculum design and evaluation for Wisconsin Lutheran College, the Pathways to College Program, and the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. Margarita's impact extends globally, as she has engaged in advocacy and workforce development initiatives with the United Nations and the Youth Assembly. Her multifaceted leadership journey showcases her dedication to fostering positive change and creating opportunities for others.
Margarita Avila holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications and Marketing from Wisconsin Lutheran College. She is a certified facilitator of the Dependable Strengths Program. In 2022. Ms. Avila was named one of Wisconsin’s Most Influential Latino Leaders. Her dedication to inspiring and empowering others is at the core of her mission. Her deep-rooted passion for diversity and inclusion propels her to step beyond the boundaries of her comfort zone, explore new places and immerse herself in diverse industries.
Nydia Martinez
Executive Director
Laura, the Academy's GED/HSED Coordinator, has dedicated her career to guiding students toward opportunities in their educational development. With over seven years of teaching experience, which she gained in Mexico, she finds her true calling in education.
Outside of work, Laura enjoys spending her free time with her family, exploring nature through hikes, and finding inspiration in outdoor reading. She is also passionate about art, especially oil painting. Laura loves discovering new places, cultures, and flavors, which enrich her perspective and teaching. She is committed to creating an enriching educational environment and providing comprehensive support to each of the academy's students.
Julio García
Director of Education
Julio, Director of Education, joined the Latino Academy in 2019 to lead the Adult Education, English as a Second Language, and Computer Literacy programs. After teaching Spanish, literature, and culture at UW-Madison for 13 years, he moved into the non-for-profit world to support housing justice. After that, he returned to education with a community focus to increase educational opportunities for those who, many times, were never given the option or even thought of it as a possibility for them. His approach is centered in student accountability and independence, together with a strong sense of equity in access to opportunities and programming, so all communities have the chance to enjoy quality trainings and access to new industries.
Laura Meza
GED/HSED Coordinator
Laura, the Academy's GED/HSED Coordinator, has dedicated her career to guiding students toward opportunities in their educational development. With over seven years of teaching experience, which she gained in Mexico, she finds her true calling in education.

Jorge Aguilar
RTTC Manager
As the Manager of the CDL Program at RTTC, Jorge leads efforts in supporting candidates to obtain their Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and successfully enter the transportation industry. The program is dedicated to providing comprehensive training and resources to ensure candidates are well-prepared for their careers on the road.
Clara Lopez Ortiz
Business Development Coordinator
Clara Lopez Ortiz is a dynamic Business Development Coordinator with a fresh perspective and a commitment to excellence. She recently transitioned into this role, bringing valuable experience from her previous position as an Equity Officer at the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, where she advanced equity initiatives over four and a half years. Clara’s impactful work earned her recognition as a “Woman to Watch” by HER Magazine.
She holds a Master’s in International Business Management from Kingston University in London, providing her with a global perspective and strong business strategies. Originally from Iowa, Clara is now embracing new opportunities in Madison, WI. Passionate about exploring new places, immersing herself in art, and volunteering, Clara’s diverse background uniquely positions her to drive success and foster meaningful connections in her new role.

As the bilingual employment coordinator at the Latino Academy of Workforce Development, I bring over five years of recruitment experience, specializing in helping individuals find employment and equipping them with the tools needed to build successful careers. Antonella Díaz
ESL Coordinator
Antonella, a recent graduate from Grinnell College where she majored in Political Science and Education, is now the ESL Coordinator for the Latino Academy. Acknowledging that she wouldn't be where she is today without the support of others, Antonella strives to provide the same access to opportunities, helping individuals advance in their lives and reach their full potential. Antonella firmly believes in the power of education and is dedicated to empowering others to achieve greater opportunities through learning.

Kevin’s passion for supporting Latino communities in pursuing high-demand careers led him to join the LAWD Board. With experience in bilingual management, career pathways, and educational partnerships, he is committed to strengthening connections between Madison College and Latino Academy. Kevin finds inspiration in seeing students succeed and plans to create more pathways for adult learners. Outside of work, he enjoys cycling, camping, and spending quality time with his daughters.
Elizabeth Roddy

Elizabeth’s journey with the Latino Academy began in 2015, serving on the Steering Committee and, later, the Board of Directors. With strong connections across the construction industry and a deep understanding of workforce development, Elizabeth is dedicated to enhancing career pathways for LAWD students. She is especially inspired by LAWD's impact on individuals, families, and the community. Her goal is to create more apprenticeship opportunities for students. Outside of her professional roles, Elizabeth values family time as her primary passion.
Dena Gullickson

Dena joined the Board of Directors at the Latino Academy of Workforce Development after being deeply involved since 2015, when she collaborated on creating the Bilingual Construction Program. Salvador has supported the Latino Academy's mission since its early days as a program of the Vera Court Community Center. With a background in education policy and extensive board experience, Salvador brings valuable insight to the Latino Academy as it grows. He is especially motivated by LAWD’s commitment to providing a welcoming, safe space for Spanish-speaking individuals seeking career and educational advancement. His goal is to help solidify LAWD’s structures and policies for long-term sustainability. Salvador is also an advocate for bilingual education and immigrant rights.

Shiva Bidar-Sielaff, MA

Shiva Bidar-Sielaff serves as the Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at UW–Madison, where she leads efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across the university. With a master's degree in International Policy Studies, Shiva has extensive experience in diversity leadership and has been instrumental in developing programs and initiatives that foster an inclusive campus environment. She is also actively engaged in the broader community, serving on various boards and committees dedicated to social justice and equity. As Board President, Shiva Bidar-Sielaff brings her leadership in diversity and inclusion from UW–Madison to the Latino Academy, where she guides strategic initiatives that strengthen the Academy’s commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment. Shiva’s experience in developing policies that promote equity enables the Academy to enhance its educational programs and community impact, supporting Latino families in achieving economic stability and career success.
