Pre-Apprenticeship Internship at the Boys & Girls Club

Over the final months of winter, the Latino Academy team spent Tuesday afternoons collaborating with the McKenzie Regional Workforce Training Center at the Boys & Girls Club in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. During five weekly sessions, teen participants had the opportunity to explore the world of transportation—learning what it takes to drive a truck, the challenges and responsibilities involved in operating a large vehicle, and the vital role this industry plays in the country’s economy.

Among the more than twelve students enrolled, one participant stood out: Amour Bivens, a 17-year-old with an entrepreneurial spirit and strong motivation to learn. Amour showed exceptional dedication to the course—listening attentively to each presentation, taking detailed notes, and actively engaging in class discussions.

One of the program’s highlights was the hands-on experience with the truck driving simulator at the McKenzie Center. This device, equipped with a three-panel screen and realistic controls, immersed students in a virtual environment that faithfully replicates the experience of driving a semi-truck. Amour excelled during this activity—quickly learning how to navigate tight spaces, avoid obstacles, and park precisely between cones and virtual barriers.

At the end of the five-week course, Amour shared her excitement about pursuing a CDL license. Although, due to her age, she’ll initially only be eligible to work as an intrastate driver (within Wisconsin), there are many opportunities for young people like her—responsible, driven, and eager to build a professional career without the burden of college debt.

Amour still has a few months to go before she turns 18 and can apply for her Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), but at Latino Academy, we eagerly look forward to the moment she begins her hands-on training as a future professional truck driver.
